About Into the Woods Jr.

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Book by James Lapine
Into the Wood, JR is presented through special arrangement with and all authorized materials are supplied by Music Theatre International, New York, NY.

Be careful what you wish for, as Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s cockeyed fairy tale comes to life in this adaptation of their groundbreaking, Tony Award-winning musical.

Set in a fairy-tale kingdom, Into the Woods JR. re-imagines the Brothers Grimm tales with their narratives intertwined, and the various plots are tied together by a Narrator. The story centers around a Baker and his wife who wish to have a child and to do so must undo a witch’s curse. The two set off on a journey to break the curse, and wind up changed forever.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s musical is one gigantic fable which visits key themes of wishes, the pursuit of dreams and their consequences. Through a series of adventures and encounters with favorite fairy-tale heroes and villains— Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and the Witch —  the characters enter a journey ‘into the woods’, confronting their issues and the fallout from their mistakes.

From the Director:

Big Sandy and the surrounding Simla community have been a great source of support for our performing arts students.

The Simla High School Drama students have adventured into the realm of musical theatre, daring to perform Broadway JR Edition musicals annotated for performance by secondary students.

In cooperation with educational theatrical licensing agencies such as MTI, Simla High School is dedicated to offering educational theatre, meeting the needs of various types of performers.

Thank you, faculty and administration for supporting the drama students. We have such a talented group of students and when we allow their imaginations to fly, there are no limits!
Thank you, parents, for sharing your students and letting them shine!
Thank you, students, for making me laugh, for driving me crazy, for making me look forward to my job every day!!  You are remarkable!!
